Policy Council Welcomes New Members Appoints Offers for 2009
Laredo, TX – The Policy Council of TMC’s Migrant Seasonal Head Start program held their regular meeting on Thursday, January 8, 2009 in Laredo, TX.
The TMC Policy Council consists of eighteen members (18) from the eight states where TMC has centers, one board liaison, plus five community representatives representing the Wintergarden region, the Valley region, the Indiana region, the Western region, the Ohio region and UMOS Wisconsin Delegate agency.
The Policy Council welcomed new members Maria Esparza representing the Indiana Region migrant parent (Kokomo, IN center); Veronica Solis representing the Wintergarden Region migrant parent (San Antonio, TX center); Leean Benavides representing the Wintergarden Region migrant parent (Falfurrias, TX center); Nydia Palomo representing the Wintergarden Region seasonal parent (Crystal City, TX center); Edward Villarreal representing the Rio Grande Valley Region migrant parent (Brownsville I & T, TX center); Maria Vitalia Ibarra representing the Rio Grande Valley Region migrant parent (JJ Balli center - Alamo, TX); Guadalupe Perez representing the Rio Grande Valley Region migrant parent (Las Milpas center – Pharr, TX); Elizabeth Ibarra representing the Rio Grande Valley Region seasonal parent (Edinburg, TX center); Christopher Peña representing the Western Region migrant parent (Lubbock, TX center); Ismael Perez representing the Ohio Region migrant parent (Fremont, OH center); Guadalupe Andrade representing the Ohio Region seasonal parent (Willard, OH center); and, Patricia Lira representing the UMOS Delegate Agency migrant parent (Beaver Dam, WI center).
At this meeting, the Policy Council elected a new slate of officers for 2009. Claudia Salazar was elected President; Maria Rios was elected Vice-President; Maria Esparza was elected Secretary; Karla Valdez was elected Treasurer; and Veronica Solis was elected Sergeant-at-Arms. Officers are elected on a yearly basis to the Policy Council.
Background
Each member of the Policy Council is chosen from their respective region where TMC offers services. A parent who has children in a TMC center may serve on the local Parent Center Committee. To serve as a region representative a parent must serve as the President of their Parent Center Committee of the Center where there children are served. Elections at the region level among all Presidents are held to select the new representative to the Migrant Seasonal Head Start program Policy Council. Each parent may serve up to three years as a member of the Policy Council.
